McMahon joined the Iowa program as a walk-on and was redshirted in 2000. He appeared in 10 games as a member of field goal and PAT special teams in 2001. McMahon was a key reserve on the offensive line while continuing his special teams duties as a sophomore in 2002. He took over starting duties in 2003, lining up in the first two games at right tackle before shifting inside to right guard for the remaining 11 contests. He was named team captain and earned All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention in 2004, posting 60 knockdown blocks in his final season with the team.
