Olympic women's boxing is a horible idea for tickets sales
Gender equality sunk to a new low when it was learned on October 25, 2005 that the International Olympic committee was considering the addition of women's boxing to the summer Olympics.
The push for gender equality in the Olympics was one of the main reasons that baseball was dropped from the lineup of sports. Women's wrestling was added for the 2204 Athens summer games and women's hockey has been added to the winter Olympics.
But women's boxing? Is there really a need for that?
I can think of three reasons it should be done:
- Ticket sales. People in backwards countries would love to see women pummeling each other.
- Sex appeal. Nothing sells tickets like a semi-naked woman.
- Violence. Oh yeah, violence always sells.
This is a silly idea. What is the world's population of experienced, fight tested female boxers? 100?
