Clinton Portis second season expected to improve

Clinton Portis' first year with the Washington Redskins was a major disappointment as many fantasy football owners can attest to. His statistics were down and his attitude was horrible. Yet, Clinton Portis sees this coming season as a good chance to improve.

Here were Clinton Portis' statistics for 2003 and 2004:

Year  Team       G  Rush Yds  Y/G   Avg TD Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD
 2003 Denver     13 290  1591 122.4 5.5 14 38  314 24.2 8.3 72 7.7 10 0  3
 2004 Washington 15 343  1315  87.7 3.8 5  40  235 15.7 5.9 18 4.4 10 2  5

As you can see, Clinton Portis really tailed off in terms of TDs and points.

Clinton Portis chalked up last year's problems to the offense:

All the movement, the patience that it takes to run the offense that we had last year, the patience that was involved in running this system. Not really being spread out, being crowded. Dodging one person, having to dodge two more. It was clustered.

He thinks this year will be different:

Knowing that you're one tackle away, you're one play away from having a big day. Frustration can kick in. The aggravation can kick in. You're used to doing one thing, and you turn around and turn into a grinder — 3 yards a carry. This year, I think it's going to be a lot more spread out and a lot more open.

Joe Gibbs, the head coach of the Washington Redskins, has tinkered with the offense to make it more to Portis' ability. Though Portis thinks last year wasn't that bad even through the Washington Redskins were an anemic thirtieth in the offensive rankings:

I know players excited about getting a new deal after 1,000 yards. For my worst season to be 1,300 yards, if that's the worst season I ever have in my career, I'm fine with that.
