Pope John Paul II Honored by European Soccer Teams

In a move designed to show respect for Pope John Paul II, the UEFA
(United European Football Association) asked it's teams to observe a minute of silence. Is it odd a professional sports organization would
honor a religious leader? Maybe not.

The Chief Executive of UEFA, Lars-Christer Olsson, said:
Pope John Paul II was a great worldwide leader of people and a firm
believer in peace.

I can understand the peace angle coming from the football or as we
Americans call it, professional soccer, leagues.

Most teams sported a black arm band and/or a moment of silence. The
Italians went all out cancelling all events the weekend the Pope John
Paul II died.
