Did Walter Eckershall set football records?
Walter Eckersall was the University of Chicago's first All-American, placing on Walter Camp's first team in his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. His first year as an All-American ( 1904 ) he was listed as an end. In 1905 and 1906 he was given the quarterback spot. Eckersall, quarterbacking Stagg's Maroons finally put an end to Michigan's 5 year winning streak under "Point-A-Minute Yost."
Until Michigan lost 2 to 0 to Chicago on Thanksgiving Day 1905, Yost's team had not had one point scored against them that year. Those who remember Eckersall's quick-thinking onthe-field strategy insist that he was the game's first quarterback that would have fit into today's modern attack. He became football's ablest referee.
