What did the Galloping Ghost do?
Harold "Red" Grange led the University of Illinois into glory as he made All-American in 1923, 1924 and 1925. His number 77 jersey is forever enshrined among other accessories that once belonged to Coach Bob Zuppke's "Galloping Ghost". He specialized in the long, long run for a touchdown. His timing and elusiveness were such that he seemed to glide past his would-be tacklers.
As the nation's first number one college star to turn professional under a promotional type contract engineered by C. C. Pyle "Red" might not have been outstanding as a Pro, but he drew sensational crowds. Although it is reported that his team mates only grudgingly blocked for him and never let him look too good, all the publicity "Red" got helped the Chicago Bears and their adversaries to make the National Football League the power that it is today.
