Who won the first Heisman Trophy
Jay Berwanger was the first winner of the famous Heisman Trophy and University of Chicago's last All-American. These awards made in 1935 to Honor the year's outstanding college football player were a solid tribute to one of the most explosive backfield men in football history. Opponents all agreed that John "Jay" Berwanger was a "one man team".
He made his own holes in the line and bowled over the defensive secondaries like ten pins. When he crossed the goal line after one 70 yard touchdown run against Illinois there were no less than seven Illini still on the turf after hard driving attempts to tackle him. He had flattened or "Berwangered" them all.
