Why is Benny Friedman called the great convincer
Benny Friedman rates as the "great convincer". In the depression days of 1930 as coach and quarterback of the New York Giants he solidly whipped the Notre Dame All-Stars in a game Knute Rockne predicted would be won by the College men because of their greater spirit. The score was 22 to 0 with Benny making two touchdowns himself.
This game was actually a two-way convincer. It proved that professional football players can reach a high level of conditioning and playing excellence and it also proved that Collegians would have to practice vigorously and systematically if they expected to overcome a top professional team. Benny was a fair football player in high school, but became famous as Michigan's All-American quarterback in 1926.
