Trivia about college football in the 1940s

1940 - Time for putting ball into play, including huddle, fixed at 25 seconds, instead of 30. Penalty later fixed at 5 yards.

1941 - Free substitutions permitted, except during last 2 minutes of first half.
1942 - 5-yard penalty for illegal delay of game.
1943 - 1944 -- No changes during war. During this period, about 350 colleges abandoned football for duration.
1945 - Team making second consecutive kickoff out of bounds was penalized by opposition getting ball on its 40-yard line.
1946 - Number of "times out" allowed each team increased from 3 to 4. Size of numerals worn by players ordered increased.
1947 - Running shift eliminated.
1948 - Use of tee for all place kicks legalized. Specify scrimmage at receiving team's restraining line after second out-of-bounds kick-off.
1949 - New definition of clipping to protect the player below the waist only on blocks thrown from behind. Blockers required to keep fists against chest. Linemen on offense not to pass neutral zone on a forward pass until the pass was touched.
