why is Earl Neale important football?

Earl Neale - Fresh from 8 years of baseball with St. Louis' "Gas House Gang" this "Old Pro" made his first big splash in football when he coached Washington and Jefferson to a scoreless tie in the 1921 Rose Bowl game against highly favored California. Following many years of great coaching including stops at West Virginia and Yale "Greasy" really hit the top when his Philadelphia Eagles won the National Football League Championship two years in a row during 1948 and 1949.

Coach Neale has been in the thick of many a title fight since 1949 and is still the greatest "bench caller" and "rattler" in the business. Opponents have found that they must keep their heads around "Greasy" Neale or they will slide right down to defeat. His 1960 World's Championship Eagles were led by Norm Van Brocklin.
