Who was Steve Owen and the umbrella defense
Steve Owen, the defensive-minded mentor of the New York Giants, was one of the games biggest coaches in size as well as success. Although he weighed less than 250 lbs. he looked even bigger. Steve was always happiest when the Giants completely shut out their opposition even if the score stood at just a meager 3 to 0, thanks to a field goal.
He even seemed embarrased when his own Giants would score a touchdown. "Why over-do a good thing?" His biggest moment provided Paul Brown with one of the few embarrassing moments he has ever had. Steve's famous "umbrella defense" finally stopped the Cleveland Browns in a crucial game at Yankee Stadium and the modern defensive game was born with its new breed of Red Doggers, Mad Doggers, Blitzers, Pinchers, Loopers and Stunters.
