Bob Beamon Happy He Landed
The most unbelievable performance in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, was the 29-foot-2 1/2-inch broad jump by Bob Beamon of the United States. He leaped nearly two feet farther than any human being had ever leaped before.
When he touched down, following his record long jump, twenty-two-year-old Beamon kissed the ground again and again. When asked if the kisses expressed his feelings about achieving an historic breakthrough, and setting the fantastic all-time record, Beamon shook his head.
"No, that wasn't the reason," he said. "I was just happy I landed!"
