Bobby Hull and Eddie Shack

Spectacular Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks, the only player in National Hockey League history to score 54 goals in a single season, once had a run-in with one of pro hockey's roughest tough guys, Eddie Shack. In a game against the New York Rangers, Hull skated into the corner of the ice in pursuit of a loose puck. But Eddie Shack streaked in from Hull's blind side and checked him into the boards with such force that it could be heard all over the arena.

Surprisingly, he helped Bobby Hull to his feet, and apologized: "Gee, Bobby, it won't happen again."

However, a few minutes later, Eddie Shack again smashed into Bobby Hull, and again he apologized. Again, the mild-mannered Black Hawk star said nothing. But the third time rough Eddie Shack creamed Bobby Hull and apologized, the ice-wonder barked at Shack:

"You're going to make me real mad if you continue doing it. Three times you've promised it wouldn't happen."

"I know, Bob, and I'm sorry," said tough guy Eddie Shack, "but you know that I always lie a little."
