Casey Stengal and Marv Throneberry
When 70-year-old manager Casey Stengel, winner of ten pennants and seven World Series championships, finally was fired by the ungrateful New York Yankees because he had grown too old, he became the manager of the newly formed New York Mets, the losingest major-league team in history. In one season alone, they lost 120 games. Oddly, manager Stengel's most popular Met star was his worst player, Marvelous Marv Throneberry. Marvelous Marv and the Mets found more ways to lose ball games than anybody thought possible-while Casey often watched in silence and suffered.
But one day, Marvelous Marv belted a terrific triple that caused old Casey Stengel to explode into the most violent verbal outburst of his managerial career. For when Throneberry reached third base, the umpire called him out for failing to touch second base. Out of the dugout came manager Stengel, roaring with rage at the ump, and the injustice of his decision. But a Met coach suddenly silenced Stengel by whispering into his ear:
"Calm down, Casey. Marv also forgot to touch first base!"
