Johnny Longden and the Priest
The famous Johnny Longden, who rode more horses to victory than any other jockey in history-6,032-tells about a priest who one day was seen blessing the nags at the race track. A bettor noticed that a long shot won after being blessed by the priest. Thereafter, he bet on every horse blessed by that priest, and he won heavily.
Came the last race of the day, and the happy bettor wagered all his winnings on the horse the priest went to visit. That horse ran last. Angrily, the unhappy bettor, now flat broke, asked the priest what had happened with his blessings.
"That's the trouble with all you Protestants," said the priest. "You don't know the difference between blessings and last rites."
