Ted Williams Booed at Home

When the Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams was making history with the Boston Red Sox, he wasn't the most popular player in the major leagues, especially in his home town. Whenever the "Splendid Splinter" appeared on the field, invariably he triggered a salvo of razzberries from the fans.

One afternoon, before the start of a game, Ted Williams made the mistake of emerging first from the Red Sox dugout. The moment the fans saw him, they exploded in a storm of booing and catcalls. Whereupon one of his teammates cracked:

"Look, guys! The early worm catches the bird."
