Horse racing beginner's luck and neighbor

A dear little old lady who had never been away from the country finally came to the big city to live. One morning, she met one of her apartment house neighbors. She noticed that he was not particularly well dressed and a little run down at the heels. After a few minutes she asked the man what he did for a living.

"I follow the horses," he replied. "And because you're such a nice lady, I can give you a marvelous horse for only five dollars."

The gentle-hearted little old lady looked again at her ill-dressed neighbor, dug into her pocketbook, and handed him a five-dollar bill. Tucking the bill away, the man leaned over the old lady and whispered in her ear.

"The horse I'm giving you is Gallant Glow at Belmont, and let me tell you, you've got yourself a wonderful horse for your five dollars. Be seeing you!"

That night, the naive little lady told her city-wise son what she had done.

"Mother, you were swindled!" he exclaimed in disgust. "You can be sure that's the last you'll ever hear from that man. You can kiss the five dollars good-bye!"

"I don't care," said the dear old lady. "In this little apartment, where could I keep a horse if he did bring me one?"
