Max Baer and Heywood Broun

One of the greatest columnists in newspaper history, the late Heywood Broun, when he was a sports reporter could already turn a phrase with biting humor.

He was at ringside that memorable evening when Max Baer was butchering the 270-pound Primo Carnera. As the bloody Italian giant staggered to his feet after his eleventh knockdown, a colleague passionately moved by this gory display of ring courage turned to Heywood Broun and said:

"My, oh, my, but that big fellow certainly can take it!"

"Sure, but he doesn't seem to know what to do with it," replied the bored Heywood Broun.
