The late Ring Lardner was another sports reporter who had the gift of humor with a single phrase that could tell an entire story. Once, he informed his public about a famous baseball star who had fallen in love, in these few simple words:
"He gave her a look that you could have poured on a waffle." Another time, Ring Lardner wrote his opinion of a new big-league ballplayer thus:
"Although he is a bad fielder, he is also a very poor hitter."
