Rube Lutzke Cleveland pitcher
Rube Lutzke of the Cleveland Indians was a rough-and-tumble clown of the diamond, but he had his serious moments, too. Near the end of his baseball career, he was traveling with his team on its final road trip when one night in the diner the players began showering poor Rube with lumps of sugar.
At first, Lutzke took it with a grin, but as the lumps of sugar continued to pepper him from all directions, he slowly began to boil. When a lump hit him squarely on the nose, bringing a trickle of blood, he sprang from his seat in outraged rebellion.
"Why don't you dopes start acting your age?" he yelled. "I don't know who threw that last one, but believe me, when the season ends next week I'm not going to say good-by to a single one of you lugs. The innocent will just have to suffer with the guilty."
