A young ballplayer who had never gone very far in school finished his first major-league season in fine style and dropped in at the club offices to discuss his next year's contract.

"I'd like a raise, boss," he said. "I did pretty good this year."

"Why, certainly, my boy," answered the club owner. "How does a one-fourth raise in pay strike you?"

"One fourth?" yelled the kid indignantly. "Nothing doing! After the way I played this season I ought to get at least a one-fifth raise!" The club owner met his terms.
