Chess player vacation playing

Two well-known chess players vacationing at an inn sat down one morning to play a game of chess. A few moments after they had started, they were joined by the proprietor of the inn. For two hours he sat watching the two chess experts play without uttering a single word.

Suddenly, a dispute arose between those two chess masters concerning the problem of a certain move. Finally, they both agreed to accept the decision of their lone spectator. So they turned to him and asked for the inn owner's opinion.

"Gentlemen," he shrugged his shoulders, "who knows anything about chess?"

"Do you mean to say that you don't know anything about the game?" asked one of the players.

"Do you mean to say that you don't know how to play chess and yet you've been sitting here for two hours watching us?" shrieked the second player.

"But why?" both players demanded to know in chorus.

"Gentlemen, what else could I do?" replied the owner of the inn. "Did you ever see my wife?"
