Coach Ducky Pond Yale coach big game
It was just a few minutes before the big game with Harvard, and Coach Ducky Pond was steaming his Yale boys up to a frenzy of excitement before sending them out on the field. "Remember," he thundered, "you men are playing for Yale! Y-A-L-E! And do you know what those letters, Y-A-L-E, stand for? I'll tell you! Y is for Youth, something you all have, but youth alone is not enough. A is for Ability, which added to youth may get you somewhere. L is for Loyalty, loyalty to alma mater. And E is for Effort. Put youth, ability, loyalty and effort together and it spells out-victory! Victory! Victory! Now go on out there and get them! Remember-Y-A-L-E spells victory!"
Just then the signal came to go out on the field. As they passed through the tunnel leading from the locker room, one big Blue player turned to his neighbor. "You know," he muttered, "we'd never have gotten out on the field at all if Ducky had been coaching us at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute!"
