Jack Dempsey Queen of England
Most sport fans are familiar with famous tennis star Don Budge's greeting to England's Queen Mary when she entered Wimbledon Stadium one day to watch him play for the championship. (If you don't, here it is: Don was already on the court, ready to serve, when he saw the great crowd rise to its feet respectfully. Since he was already standing, he waved his racquet and called out cheerfully, "Hi, Queen!")
When Jack Dempsey was heavyweight champion of the world, he visited England and was taken to a night club one evening. His host stopped before a table.
"Oh, Jack," he said. "I'd like you to meet the Duke of York."
Jack stuck out his hand at the man who was to become the King of England. "Stay where you are," he said magnanimously. "Don't get up for me."
