Knute Rockne and bench player strategy
The immortal Knute Rockne used to hold skull sessions with his players that were as sharp and demanding of the players as any mathematical quiz. It was Rockne's custom to fling out complicated questions in strategy and demand immediate answers from his Notre Damers. One afternoon, Rockne shot out this question at his third-string quarterback: "Our ball, third quarter, second down, two yards to go and we're at mid-field. What do you do?"
"Me?" asked the startled third-stringer. "I just slide down the bench to get a better look at the next play!"
