Nat Holman coaching basketball

When Nat Holman was coaching the City College basketball teams that won so many championship honors over the years, the famous old- time player was noted for the care with which he expressed himself, particularly his diction and accent. Nevertheless, Nat, a New Yorker born and bred, had been known to slip occasionally. During a practice session one day, Nat found it necessary to give a little advice to his players.

"Remember, boys," he said, "don't try to pa-a-ss (with broad 'a') until a-a-fter (with broad 'a') you see you won't be off (ah-f)."

"Why, coach?" asked an eager beaver.

"Why?" snapped Holman. "Because it's moider if you miss!"
