Running to the point of pain in football

The height of humiliation had been reached by a battered and beaten team of a certain Southern university. The point had arrived where all that was left to salvage was health and a whole skin. With a few min utes left to play, and trailing by six touchdowns, the quarterback got his boys together in a huddle. .

"Number 36-A," he snapped. "Fullback through guard."

"Please!" gasped the fullback. "I couldn't run another step. They nearly broke my leg on that last time."

"Okay," chirped the quarterback, "make it 24-C, right half off left tackle.'

"No!" groaned the right halfback. "You saw what happened when I tried that before. I lost three teeth!"

The quarterback let out a moan of despair. "All right, then," he said, "make it 24-F. Left half on buck lateral to the right."

"Don't you dare!" howled the left halfback.' 'Last time we tried that, I like to got killed!"

At this point the referee paced off five yards against the team for too much time in the huddle. Again the quarterback called his battered team together.

"Well?" he asked. "Any of you guys got any ideas what we ought to do.?"

"Tell you what," piped up a guard brightly, "how about a nice long incomplete forward pass?"
