In 1968, the St. Louis Cardinals put up a 10-foot-5-inch bronze statue on a marble pedestal 8 feet high, in front of Busch Stadium, their home ballpark, in honor of Stan Musial, the greatest player in the history of the club. At the dedication, when that statue of Musial was unveiled, the Cards' manager, Red Schoendienst, who had been Musial's teammate and roommate in their playing days, and had remained one of his closest and warmest friends, arose to speak in tribute to a baseball immortal. Looking at the beaming Stan Musial, he said:

"In your twenty years as a player for the St. Louis Cardinals you've done a lot for them, and for all baseball. Now you're going to give the pigeons a break."
