Columbia football referees and holding
Another time it was a Columbia sophomore tackle who got into trouble on the field. He complained to the referee that he was being held.
"Go on back there and play," said the official. "I'll watch and see what's happening to you."
A few plays later, the official called the tackle to one side. "Nobody's holding you, son," he said. ''You're being mousetrapped."
"Mousetrapped?" exclaimed the youngster. "What's that?"
The referee hurriedly explained.
"Gosh," said the youngster. "You mean to say they let me go through on purpose?"
"That's right," said the official.
"Well, I'll be durn ed," said the sophomore tackle. "That's a wonderful trick. I'm going to tell Mr. Little all about it!"
