Joe Cantillon managing minnesota pitchers

When the late Joe Cantillon was managing at Minneapolis, he had as one of his pitchers a fellow named Harry Harper who was so wild he almost drove his manager crazy. Harper had been known to issue as many as twenty bases on balls in a game. One very windy day, Cantil- Ion sent Harper to the mound in desperation, and the wild man began to hand out the walks. After a couple of innings, Harper started looking towards the bench in the hope that Cantillon would take pity on him and lift him for another pitcher.

Cantillon squirmed on the bench until he could contain himself no longer. "I'm not going to take you out," he yelled at the harassed pitch er. "Stay out there and throw. First thing you know, the wind's going to blow a strike over the plate for you!"
