How did Bob Waterfield play football
Bob Waterfield always managed to say things with action. He was and is a man of few words. As a small child he tried to trade his costly side-walk racer for the first football he ever saw. From head to toe he was one coordinated set of powerful muscles from engaging in every known type of gymnastics or physical exercises. Under Joe Stydahar, Bob Waterfield quarterbacked the Los Angeles Rams to their last World's Championship in 1951. He was assisted by Norm Van Brocklin and the phenomenal pass receptions of Tom Fears and "Crazy Legs" Hirsch.
At U.C.L.A. where he had been their standout quarterback and again with the Rams, "Buckets" Waterfield could run as well as he passed and his seeming indestructibility was a source of amazement to his opponents as well as a source of inspiration to his team mates. When Bob said "This is what we're going to do", they believed it would work . . . and sure enough, IT DID!
