A new bow, or one that has not been used recently, should be strung with care. One should not try to string such a bow on the first attempt --the bow should be bent gradually and progressively several times before reaching the position of a fully strung bow.

Old bows, or ones that have dried out thoroughly, should be reconditioned before using. This is done by scraping the varnish off of the back side and applying warm water, and when dry, giving the bow a coat of light oil. Refinish with a coat of varnish.
