Who gained the most yards in a college football game

November 11, 1978, was a wintry day at the Air Force Academy's Falcon Stadium. It was 22 degrees at kickoff, with a 16-mile-per-hour wind blowing and snow falling. It was hardly the kind of an afternoon on which to expect a scintillating performance.

Georgia Tech's Eddie Lee Ivery was undeterred, however, despite gaining only 11 yards on his first four carries that day against Air Force. After the slow start, Ivery shredded the Falcons' defense by gaining 345 yards on his final 22 carries. Included in Ivery's dash to a then-record 356 yards rushing were touchdown sprints of 73, 80 and 57 yards.

Ironically, Ivery (who averaged 13.7 yards per carry against the Falcons) fumbled away the ball on his record-setting play, a 21-yard gain. Georgia Tech walloped Air Force, 42-21.
