Babe Ruth sickness illness apple a day

They say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but the immortal Babe Ruth, greatest home-run hitter of all time, never believed it.

The "King of Swat" was king-size in everything he did, even when it came to eating. He had a gargantuan appetite which he couldn't control even during working hours. Once, just before the start of a game, Babe sneaked in a couple of sandwiches, ate a dozen hot dogs, gulped down ten bottles of soda pop, and then topped off that hurried snack with an apple. After only a few innings of play, he caved in with a stomach-ache that was heard around the baseball world. Headlines told an entire nation about Babe Ruth's bellyache.

When the very sick and unhappy Babe was carted off to a hospital, he moaned: "I knew I shouldn't have et that apple."
