Florida spring training schedule and lessons
One spring training day in Florida the Giants were playing a tight and exciting exhibition game against a rival major-league team. Manager Bill Terry was howling for a victory. The players to a man were driving hard to satisfy their boss. In a late inning, the Giants started a rally. Manager Bill Terry pointed dramatically at Fresco Thompson who was sitting on the Giant bench.
"Go in there, Thompson, and run for that guy on second!" he yelled.
"Gee, boss, I can't," protested Thompson, "I just had my shoes shined.'
