Red Barrett throwing the nothing ball pitch
Red Barrett, talkative pitcher of the old Boston Braves, who won his share of games with a mystifying nothing-ball, was telling some of the boys in the dugout about a hard-luck experience of his while pitching in the International League. It seems that the redhead had been blanking the old Baltimore Orioles for eight innings and had reached the last of the ninth, still holding a slim lead of 1-0.
"Then you know what happens?" continued the disgusted Barrett. "I got them two out and the bases full and that durn shortstop of mine picks up an easy roller and heaves it clean out of the park. That's hard luck for you!"
"Yeah," sympathized a teammate who had been listening closely, "but can I ask you something, Red?"
"Sure," answered the aggrieved Barrett.
"How did the bases get loaded in the first place?"
