snapper garrison jockey garrison finish long odds
Early in his fabulous career, the unforgettable Snapper Garrison, probably the greatest jockey of them all, who made a "Garrison Finish" part of the American language, was bitterly berated one day by the disappointed owner of a horse which had lost a race. The young and inexperienced jockey almost had piloted that broken-down nag to a surprising victory when that 50-to-l shot had faltered.
"You had the race in your pocket," shrieked the irate horse owner. "Why didn't you keep on going instead of folding up in the homestretch?"
"What?" snapped the Snapper. "And leave my horse?"
